Care and maintenance of wooden cutting boards: How to keep your cutting board in top shape
A wooden cutting board is not only practical but also a beautiful kitchen accessory. With proper care, it will remain functional and visually appealing for a long time. Here are some important tips to keep your cutting board in top shape:
1. How do I clean my wooden cutting board?
Despite the antibacterial properties of many wood species, it's important to clean wooden cutting boards properly. For light soiling, simply wipe the cutting board with a damp cloth. Avoid submerging the board in water, as wood is sensitive to moisture. Afterward, place it where it can dry thoroughly. This is especially important for cutting boards without feet. For heavier soiling, you can clean it with a mild dish soap, but avoid harsh cleaning agents.
Under no circumstances should wooden cutting boards be cleaned in the dishwasher!
Important when preparing meat, poultry or fish:
If you're using a cutting board to prepare raw meat, poultry, or fish, pay special attention to ensuring the board is regularly maintained and its surface is intact. It should be cleaned immediately and thoroughly after use to avoid hygiene risks.
2. How do I oil a wooden cutting board
If the cutting board is used daily and cleaned regularly, it should be oiled every 6 to 8 weeks. For less intensive use, oiling the board every few months is often sufficient. It's important to apply the oil as soon as the board appears dry or brittle to maintain its longevity and functionality.
When choosing oil, walnut oil or linseed oil are recommended. Both are fully absorbed into the wood and provide good protection against moisture. Rapeseed and olive oil can also be used, but they tend to develop a strange smell over time, making them not the best choice.
Apply the oil evenly to the entire surface with a soft cloth or brush and let it absorb for several hours or overnight. You can then wipe off any excess oil with a clean cloth.
Regular care will keep your wooden cutting board hygienic, durable, and visually appealing – so you can enjoy it for a long time!
Warning: Dry linseed oil cloths can ignite spontaneously!
